SECURITYWATCH Written/compiled by Paul Rothman ASIS Access Control Shakeup Axis' foray into the door control market made the biggest news on the show floor in Chicago It may have come as a surprise to many, but the biggest vendor news coming out of the lateSeptember ASIS show in Chicago was a new player in the access control market: video stalwart Axis Communications. "This move was based on our feedback from integrators," explained Fredrik Nilsson, general manager for Axis Photo: Joel Griffin Communications in North America. In fact, Nilsson said that Axis worked closely with its top integrators and application partners as it developed the system with the installer in mind. In fact, Diebold, Kratos, Stanley and Wachter Inc., actually beta tested the new access control solution. "Bringing product innovation to the physical access control market is a natural step in Axis' development, as there is a strong connection between access control and video surveillance," said Ray Mauritsson, president and CEO of Axis, in a statement. "Axis plays an important role in driving convergence to IP-based products in video surveillance...The physical access control market is primed to make the shift to open IP technology." The Axis A1001 Network Door Controller is open IP-based and features its built-in, web-based Entry Manager software. It is designed for smallto mid-sized installations with typically 10 doors and basic access control requirements — such as offices, industrial buildings and retail stores. Of course, the company did not enter into this new market blindly. In addition to the work with its top integration partners to perfect the system and its installation, Nilsson said Axis has been running the access control system from 10 The Axis booth was buzzing at September's ASIS show after the company announced its first-ever door controller product, the AXIS A1001 with Entry Manager software (above). nearly a year and a half at its U.S. headquarters in Chelmsford, Mass. Despite the new product and market, Nilsson stressed that "video will still be the majority of our business." The main features of the product include: • Open architecture, allowing easy integration of video, intrusion detection and other systems; • Power over Ethernet support to reduce the need for separate power and proprietary cables; • UL 2043 listing for plenum-rated products; • Automatic synchronization and storage of cardholder data and system configuration information between controllers, with units manageable from any network computer; • Support for most existing reader protocols and reader types; •Installation wizard and wiring printouts to help integrators complete and verify installation; and • Compliance with ONVIF Profile C. ❚ Learn more about Axis' A1001 at www.securityinfowatch.com/11177780. www.SecurityInfoWatch.com | SD&I; | November 2013
