■ SimpliSafe unveiled a completely redesigned version of all its products at CES 2018. 26 Security Dealer & Integrator / www.SecurityInfoWatch.com February 2018 DIY SECURITY ROUNDUP FIRE SAFETY SimpliSafe, Ring and others unveil new or revamped security systems One of the original DIY security pro- viders, SimpliSafe Home Security, unveiled a complete re-design of its products at CES. The company teamed with global design firm IDEO to rebuild the devices from the ground up, "with new safeguards to create a latticework of protection against intruders, power outages, downed Wi-Fi, crowbars and every- thing in between," a statement says. Sensors are half the size with dou- ble the range. The company also revealed its plans to release a video doorbell, outdoor cameras, a smart lock and Amazon Alexa voice inte- gration over the course of 2018. LifeDoor: Closes Doors During a Fire LifeDoor, a new technology unveiled at CES, is designed to close interior doors when triggered by a building's existing smoke detectors. It also notifies users via mobile app, illuminates the room and sounds a secondary alarm. The unit itself mounts to hinges on interior doors, and integrates with existing smoke detectors. "As a firefighter, I know the impor- tance of having your bedroom door closed when you are sleeping, but in my house, my daughter doesn't like her door closed; and I like to leave mine open so I can hear if she needs me or if someone is trying to break in," explains LifeDoor co-founder Joel Sellinger. "The more I thought about this disconnect between our life- style and our home safety, the more I wanted to come up with this solution." LifeDoor can be installed on any standard residential inte- rior door utilizing the existing hinge. It then automatically closes the door when a connected smoke detector sounds, "buying you not seconds, but minutes to determine how to safely exit the structure," Sellinger says. According to the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute, a closed door can mean the difference between 100 degrees and 1,000 degrees in a fire. DIY Newsmakers from the Show Floor Ring, fresh off its settlement with ADT, teamed with Shaquille O'Neal to showcase its "whole home security ecosystem" – which includes two new indoor/outdoor security cam- eras and a line of smart, connected outdoor lights called Ring Beams. The Beams product is a result of the company's acquisition of LED lighting company Mr. Beams, which was also announced at CES. Blink, the home security and HD video monitoring system acquired by Amazon in January, launched its Blink XT outdoor camera at CES and previewed its total security system offering – which will include intru- sion sensors, siren, keypad and water sensors – as well as "no-contract" monthly service plans for the moni- toring of up to 10 cameras. Canary unveiled its Canary View product, a low-cost DIY security sys- tem that features the same camera and form factor at $99. Angee, a home camera that generated more than $500K on Kickstarter, also debuted, showcasing its ability to literally turn and face the wall to respect homeowners' privacy. continuous searches and automatic threat blocking, to live agent incident resolution and insurance, to reim- bursement if an incident occurs." ADT Cybersecurity for residential customers will be officially rolling out later in 2018. Of course, one home cybersecu- rity service does not make a trend; in fact, a large number of companies introduced or showcased residential cybersecurity products at CES 2018. Among the most interesting: Fortress Cyber Security's UTM PLUS unified threat management product that integrates home secu- rity and network security in one appliance (www.securityinfowatch. com/12390587); Dojo by BullGuard, a cybersecu- rity monitoring product designed specifically for smart home/IoT devices (www.securityinfowatch. com/12390486); and Established internet security pow- erhouse McAfee introduced an iden- tity theft monitoring service (www. securityinfowatch.com/12390593). ■ Sellinger ■ Firefighter Joel Sellinger co- founded the LifeDoor product, which automatically closes interior home doors in the event of a fire.
