WIRELESS
Commercial
LiFi System
Debuts
Emerging wireless communications
system can be integrated with a variety of products
Firefly LiFi, a manufacturer of Visible Light Communications (VLC) LiFi products
– reported on by SD&I; in the past (see below) – announced at CES that its LiFi
technology is now commercially available and shipping.
LiFi is one of the hottest emerging data communications technologies in
the consumer and industrial wireless industries – using light to transmit data as
opposed to radio frequency methods, such as Wi-Fi.
"Our core technology is available for integration into a myriad of consumer
and commercial products," says Dr. Heinz Willebrand, CEO of Firefly LiFi.
Firefly's SecureLink products operate at data rates exceeding 1 Gbps and does
not use traditional 802.11 Wi-Fi protocol, which "helps avoid the cybersecurity
issues which have made Wi-Fi so vulnerable," Willebrand says.
The technology is applicable for both highly secure indoor wireless com-
munications – such as IoT and
consumer electronics – and
license-free outdoor 5G back-
haul applications in metropolitan
environments.
